Mike Arnold and Bob Hullender won all five of their matches last weekend, including the championship round that needed two extra holes over Mario Martinez and Zeke Martinez, to claim the Olmos Basin Team Match-Play event on the Alamo City Golf Trail Tour.
Arnold and Hullender earlier this year finished fifth in the ACGT team event at Brackenridge Park. Last year they won the Super Senior Division of the Texas Golf Association State Four-Ball Championship by 10 shots.
Hullender, who earlier this year recorded the rarity of two holes-in-one and a double eagle over a five-day stretch, likes the direction he and Arnold are headed.
“We do plan on playing in more events together this year, so when you’re playing in a tournament that’s not all for seniors, and you’re giving strokes on a lot of holes, it does make you feel good about your game,” Hullender said.
Arnold and Hullender got their break on the second playoff hole, Hullender said, when they won it with a par and their opponents bogeyed but did not get a stroke in the handicap-format event.
“It was tough when we were giving guys strokes. You just try to hold on during those holes,” Hullender said. “But on the other holes it was like we were all scratch golfers.”
Next event on the ACGT Tour is the individual stroke-play event on March 9 at Riverside Golf Course.
